My Role: Designer, team of 4

The goal for this project asked for a way to reimagine the waking-up experience to encourage healthier habits and foster meaningful connections at the start of the day.

the intent

Oftentimes the experience of waking up sets the tone for the rest of the day, whether after being well rested or having to rush out the door. Regardless of circumstance, many people find themselves leaning on unhealthy habits to get out of bed and wake up their minds.

With our project, Reflect, users are encouraged to redirect their attention from social media towards recalling memories through their camera roll.

This idea came from the shared embarrassment of how much time we all spend on our phones before getting out of bed.

After agreeing that many of the proposed goals for journaling or meditation were unachievable for that early in the morning and our inconsistent habits, we settled on a model that reflected the benefits of social media but was also stimulating and thoughtful enough to be enjoyable, and encouraging people to change their habits from their own willingness.

Looking at one’s own photos feels personal and contemplative, with the addition of the sharing feature adds an element of socialization that strengthens bonds that are important to the user.

How can we convert users from default mindless scrolling to valuable thinking in the morning and throughout the day to help them redirect their time?

the process

  • We began this process by creating experience maps
that synthesized our experience of waking up

  • A common theme was how easily we reverted to
    mindless scrolling on social media

  • We wanted to mitigate this tendency in the mornings
with an app that emphasized purposeful scrolling

  • The Figma platform helped us create a prototype of the app

the final prototype

future works

  • Potential help from AI to help sift through photos and recommend which ones they may want to display

  • Photos could have a journaling prompt if that is something users find relaxing and destressing

  • Implementing a voice audio feature where the user could send a voice message along with the photo being sent to their friends

  • The option/reward to send this photo physically based on how many times you use it
